Hot on the news that Frank “Grimey” Grimes is going to make an unexpected return to The Simpsons is news of another classic character back from the dead.
None other than Rabbi Hyman Krustofski, Krusty the Clown’s learned father, will be heading back to Springfield.
Voiced by legendary comedian Jackie Mason – though his occasional cameo spots were played by Dan Castellaneta – the Rebbe made his first appearance in The Simpsons back in episode six of season three, ‘Like Father, Like Clown’.
He returned in season 15’s ‘Now I Am a Clown’ and season 21’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Springfield’ and died in season 26’s ‘Clown in the Dumps’.
“Krusty is nearly going to die, so his mind flashes to the hackiest thing it can think of which is a Frozen parody, and then he sees his dad and his dad talks to him in this hallucination,” executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s the last thing Krusty sees before he’s about to die.”
Krusty has converted to Christianity in the episode in a bid to win back the love of his daughter Sophie, who has converted.
Sophie was previously played by Drew Barrymore all the way back in season 12, but this time around she’ll be voiced by Natasha Lyonne from Orange Is the New Black.
The Simpsons returns for its 28th season in the US on September 25 on Fox.
